Research
FYI - As of Summer 2022 I have retired from OSU and can no longer serve as a committee chair for any graduate student, or as an outside member for a student not working on a degree in the Department of Geography. I encourage prospective students to direct inquiries to any of my active colleagues in the Department of Geography. As of my retirement I expect updates to this particular page to be infrequent at best, as this represents my academic career at Tennessee and Oklahoma State. Good luck in your academic endeavors.
INTEREST AREAS
My primary research areas are in the following sub-fields in Geography:
Applied Urban or Historical Geography
Population/Migration Studies
Sport/Popular Culture Studies
Regional Transportation Studies
Regional Studies of the US South or The Great Plains
Public Infrastructure and School Redistricting
While I have been involved in projects in other areas at times in the past 20 years, I do not consider areas outside of those listed above as within my primary research areas of expertise.
In addition to my academic research, I have been a partner with my OSU colleague Dr Jon Comer in a consulting business named FinCo GeoDemographics LLC since 2008. The work we have undertaken through FinCo has primarily been centered on issues related to redistricting and population growth/estimates for public school districts. We have worked multiple times with both the Stillwater and Jenks Public School Districts in Oklahoma doing both population and redistricting projects. In addition, FinCo has performed numerous population and school enrollment projection projects for numerous districts in both Oklahoma and Missouri.
